Heywood Lions Club
Members of the club have served Heywood for almost 35 years. Many individuals and groups have benefited from the efforts of their local Lions Club.
Early activities included a hospital bed push to Blackpool, Hypothermia awareness campaign, Christmas parcels for diabetic sufferers. The club also played a full part in organising and running sports days for disabled people.
Since Springhill Hospice was first mooted Heywood Lions Club has actively supported the project and continues to do so, recently paying for lighting in the craft area and a catering quality toaster for the Day Centre.
The Club ran twice yearly free blood sugar testing for possible diabetes before this was taken up by the then “Local health authority”.
More recent projects include the provision of “Bottle in the Fridge” bottles free to any vulnerable person. The “bottles” provide essential basic information to the emergency services should they be called to a house where the occupants are unable to talk to them.
Information leaflets explaining the dangers of undiagnosed diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration and glaucoma have been made available free to chemists, opticians, surgeries and the libraries to help educate the public to these dangers .
For a number of years the Club has played the major role in organising the annual Charities Fête.
The Club adds to the food collected for the “Advertiser & Morrisons” Christmas Parcel appeal and members distribute the parcels.
The Club collects used spectacles for grading and distribution to developing nations.
Heywood Lions Club meets every 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 8-
